The Tongariro doesn't stop when the sun goes down.
Most people raft the Tongariro in an afternoon and go home. This is the version where you don’t go home — you paddle in with all your gear strapped into the raft, run the same 60+ Grade 3 rapids across 14km of volcanic gorge, and then keep going: to a riverside campsite that’s only reachable by raft.
That’s where the trip actually changes shape. Campfire going, dinner cooking, nothing around you but native bush and the sound of the river. No road in, no signal, no schedule to be anywhere. You sleep on the bank of the Tongariro and wake up to birdsong instead of an alarm.
After a hot breakfast and coffee, you’re back on the water to finish the rest of the river — the same rapids, the same guides, but everything feels different on day two.
It’s a genuinely rare way to experience this river, and one most rafting companies simply can’t offer, because it depends on the right stretch of water, the right campsite access, and guides who know how to run a multi-day expedition, not just a half-day trip.
Worth knowing before you book: like our standard Whitewater trip, this is active-participation rafting — you’ll need to follow paddle commands and safety instructions across both days. If you or anyone in your group has questions about fitness or suitability for an overnight expedition, get in touch and we’ll help you figure out if this is the right trip.
